The Great Sourdough Experiment - Day 3

Whoa.  Looks like we have a little too much action going on!  The book said not to expect some rise, but not a lot. perhaps 50%.



I think that I learned 1 lesson here.  Do not put this on top of a radiator!  Yes, we have good old fashioned cast iron radiators that heat our house.  Apparently, wild yeast loves this!  There's a slight funky smell...again expected.  This should diminish tomorrow.

Day 3 instructions:

Remove about 1/2 of yesterdays creation.  Add 1 cup bread flour, 1/2 cup water.  Mix, place back into covered crock, and wait.

As you can see in this photo, after I took the top off it had apparently settled a bit.  Which was nice to know. The last photo shows the finished Day 3 product and now I'm thinking that I should move it into a bigger vessel.  But what's the fun in that right?  It makes this more entertaining for you, the home viewer.




*** Bonus tip for those that read this far.  Clean this gunk up immediately.  It can be worse than glue.

    Oh no, do not put that on a radiator. That's what you would want to do if you wanted to, say, make bread in an hour! Oh well, save the spillage for those caulking projects around the house. And you don't even need to put a cover on it. On second thought, seeing as you have a zoo, put a cover on it.

    It's sitting up there again.  That's why the next post is delayed.  It had some activity, but really didn't rise too much.  I should have expected about a doubling in the dough.  So...it's sitting on the radiator, but not being kept there.  It's keeping warm.  If the temp gets too high, I'll take it back off.

    I'll have to repeat this last step.  Feed the barm again and wait for the rise. Hopefully I'll get the activity that I need to finish this.  Once that stage is done, I can make my sourdough bread, and keep the remainder of the starter for future generations.

    Oh, and the book says to cover it, so that's what I'm doing.
