Black walnuts in detail
Ok, now that I have a little more time, I picked grabbed off the ground some more walnuts. I say a little more time, because you try to find them while walking 2 dogs which are pulling you in different directions while deer scatter through the woods.
The pictures aren't pretty because it's a messy job. No gloves, but Wegmans bags do just fine to protect the hands. I was wondering today why I had "dirt" under my fingernails. Of course it wasn't dirt, it was black walnut juice. The stuff looks innocent enough but really isn't. Check out the one photo of the concrete. It shows the dried remains of yesterdays underfoot squashing vs the new innocent looking juice. That being said, here are the pics. Walnuts taken out of their martian-green husks, cleaned with a scrubby and lots of running water (which turns yellow-orange immediately) and ready to dry out for about 3 weeks or so. Who knows, I've never tried this before.

Thanks for the comment on my blog. Previously we would run over these walnuts with a car. We ended up with crushed walnut meat and lots of shells to pick out of the walnut and the car tires.
I'm anxious to see how the nutcracker works for you.
I haven't removed the green covering from mine yet. My real world work got in the way...

Ha! I pick mine up while walking two dogs, too. Neither of them seem to have the goal of picking up black walnuts in mind. Mine will go into a cake, but whatever you make, be sure to post it. The dish you mentioned sounds delicious.

Right, I knew that about the walnut cracker (that it has to be attached to something). We have an old deck that's coming off, so we've got a place for it. We'll be picking our cracker up in a couple weeks. Can't wait to see your pictures! -Monica

I'll probably have it together this weekend. I'll have to boil down the stained water a bit. That's what I've read at least! My fingernails are still stained from 2 weeks ago, so whatever happens I'm sure it'll last!
